Swimming Lessons

Picture this. The aftermath of the June/July winter (Zambian weather) just ended and it is a sunny day in October. It is the first swimming lesson of the year and you just noticed you didn’t get rid of all the “winter weight” as you try to adjust your swimming costume. The pool is always cold despite how hot it is because-physics.

You and 14 other classmates are awkwardly spaced out along the edge of the school swimming pool whose waters are still crashing together from the last class. You dip your foot in and the cold shoots up from your toes, to the roots of the hair on top of your head.

“When I blow the whistle, 4 laps in 12 minutes.”

The PE teacher, WHO REMAINS DRY AND WARM, directs.

Same pool, same target, 15 people.

It will be cold only for a while. But you have no choice but to get in eventually. Everyone else has, and your PE teacher doesn’t look like he is up for an argument today.

Time won’t slow down for you to “get ready”. You can hang around the edge of the pool for 4 months, and guess what??? It will still be April.

If you need to inch yourself into the cold water, screaming every 2 seconds… If you need to canon ball your way into the year… If you need to hold onto the edge first and push yourself forward… You will still feel the chill. But only for a little while

Whichever way you choose to tackle the year does not guarantee that you will not get winded or tired… It does not eliminate the chances of you drowning.

But StepOne101 – 2021 Guide to Survival: JUST GET INTO THE WATER FIRST!

God speed! Stay safe! LET’S DO THIS!
