Portion Control

I remember “kick-starting” my weight loss journey for like the 9 trillionth time a few years back. Whenever I try to embark on this particular journey, I try to make a purchase that signifies its beginning.

The last time I tried, I bought a plate. Not just any kind of plate, I got those sectioned plates that have the different sized slots. Obviously, fruit and veg go in the bigger slot and the rest is filled by carbs or protein.

I felt so ready! Plus, it was an adorable plate with bunnies on it. And what is more serious than a bunny on a plate?

Nothing?

I THOUGHT SO TOO!

But this is not about my amazing plate, this is about what I put in it. See, it is not always easy to “portion” your responsibilities. Of course, we prioritize the bigger section for our needs and then our wants fill in the others, but why is it easier to attain our wants more than our needs? Needs are difficult because they are constant, they are expensive, and they are less fun to attain than our wants. We NEED food, we NEED shelter, we NEED capital. The difference between needs and wants are that needs are what are essential to life and wants are the luxuries. But where is the balance?

Why do we have to strive for our needs and mitigate our wants? That is the major complexity with growing up. As a young adult you need to make money and want to make memories. But you need money to make your memories. See where I’m going with this?

So then you become overwhelmed. Your life begins to plateau and all you look forward to are sunsets because you have those few hours to eat and catch up with your family before the fatigue kicks in. Then when you sleep you wake up in angst trying to be early to start the day that you only use to wait for another sunset.

So WHEN do we portion? HOW do we know what goes in the big slot and then in the smaller slots? WHAT do we portion?

You never know the “right” amount of something, isn’t it? Where do you place a need? Is there ever a need that is less important than a want?

Remember that you are what you eat. You will reap the most of what you sow. What you place in your big section can only be identified by what you see as necessary and important. What is your driving force? At this point in life, we have to know where our focus should lie, and if we dont, then make a list!

Get your bunny-sectioned plate in order. Know what to put on it, and where to put what you have chosen. Your portions are the first steps to you attaining your goals!

And remember, you are what you eat!
