Small Business-ing

This will not be too long.

Hi!

So I ordered something(s) online because I was apparently craving pyjamas. As one does.

I planned to meet the seller at my workplace after work and was parked right at the entrance. I was able to see the seller as she drove in. The sun was mercilessly hot and it brightened up her face as she drove in. I could see her staring ahead.

If she was a word, she would be “EXHAUSTION”. She looked tired, drained and done with the day. I am not sure if I was her last delivery – but I could tell she wanted it to be over.

How could I possibly know it was her and I was not just intensely staring at a stranger? Well, to be honest I could not know for sure, but she had “the look” that all small business owners have when they have had a grueling day of deliveries. I waited for her to park and started to make my way out of my car. As soon as I approached her- she wore the biggest smile I had seen all day. It was the most heartfelt smile too! I was very overwhelmed by her gesture. It was small, but I know what it was like to have a busy day and still wear a smile through it. Especially after I saw her driving in. Her eyes were still tired but she was smiling ear-to-ear just to make me feel welcomed. The things we do for customer service, huh.

I didn’t tell her I saw her drive in. I just appreciated her a whole lot, got my parcel and left. She was a tad late in honouring our meeting but simply knowing what level of work and perseverance a day like that entails- it made me more understanding of her getting the product(s) to me.

It’s crazy how we are all just trying to get by, and if you can still maintain a smile on your face when the day hasn’t been so kind to you… Then you are a superstar 😊. To the customers of online sellers of small businesses, be kind. It is no walk in the park.

Dear small business owner,

It will be all worth it one day.

I should stop saying entries won’t be long…
