Unfit for Purpose

The last time I ran was 3 days ago. It wasn’t even a proper run; it was a weird jog thing I did to keep my new puppy entertained.

I told my sister I needed to start working out again. I just haven’t gotten to it because before I begin a workout program, I try to detox the night before so that I feel lighter when I workout the following morning.

Beginning the workout is cute and all, but continuing is where the real challenge is. When I take “a break” or “rest day” it turns into a rest week, rest month, rest year… I bear the pain of my aching muscles until the pain eventually fades and I carry on with my poor lifestyle choices.

Can you relate?

Do I sound familiar?

I’m typing this feeling heavier than I ever have in a long time. My phone’s storage space is crowded with Chloe Ting fitness videos… And my home screen is scattered with “30- day Weight Loss” apps.

According to the material I have… I should be down a whole lot of KGs.

Sometimes honestly, I’m afraid to work out because I hate the pain I get in my chest when I run. I hate how heavy I feel and how my muscles lock up. I hate the first few days of pain and the fact that I have to be consistent. So I blame my lack of ambition on my un-fitness levels.

So reader, what I’m trying to say is that being unfit doesn’t mean you can’t run. You’ll just run slower. You’ll just hurt more. You can’t jump higher… You’ll sweat more.

Being unfit doesn’t mean it is impossible. You’ll just have to put in more effort until it feels effortless. Like a 30-day challenge, give yourself a little more to do every single day.

Don’t wait to detox the night before…. All that’ll do (without the ambition to actually begin) is make you visit the toilet countless times during the night.

Becoming fit for your purpose (whatever it is) means you were once unfit.

Every body builder was once a baby that could barely use a spoon. Just like you. Their years of training however, makes them fit for their purpose.

Your weeks of training or however long you may need to achieve your fitness goals in every area if your life, be-it your marriage, career, school life… Should not be inhibited by the fact that you havent trained that part of your brain in a while. It should be motivated by the fact that all you need to do is start.

I was in the lowest level of my math class at school. I made peace with the fact that I just wasn’t good at math. But the teacher once said something that still resonates with me. It may have been a weird way of making us feel better, but he said “Being in this class means the only way you can go is up”. Being at the bottom meant we had no where else to go but up.

So be unfit for your purpose. Train your muscles.. Have that burn you hate in your chest, sweat… Do the needful and meet your potential half way!
